The recently introduced A. Lange & Söhne ODYSSEUS collection, which was originally introduced in 2019, 25 years after the brands revival through Walter Lange and Günter Blümlein, receives a very welcome update.
Upon introduction, the ODYSSEUS was only available with a blue dial and stainless steel case and bracelet. This collection put the brand into the ever extending group of luxury steel watches with an integrated bracelet. And while a steel watch with blue dial is highly coveted by collectors, some might prefer a more luxurious approach for such a timepiece.
For the collector who strives for a more luxurious approach
Therefore A. Lange & Söhne is introducing a white gold Odysseus model with a gorgeous grey dial. This piece however is not available on a bracelet, but rather on a black rubber or brown leather strap.
And while the blue dial of the steel model had a grained finish in the center of the main dial, as well as the small seconds dial, the new model has plain surfaces in these areas, but features an engraving similar to a very broad sun ray finish.
This dial design is much more classic and therefore fits this luxurious watch very well. Such as the white gold minute and hour markers received a big dose of luminous material, to ensure optimal legibility even in low light conditions.
While I was not the biggest fan of the steel ODYSSEUS, due to the design of the bracelet (I am no big fan of integrated bracelets in most cases), the white gold version is exactly how I would imagine a high-end luxury timepiece.
The grey dial in my opinion balances perfectly against the more retained white gold case and both contrast extremely well against the black rubber strap, which would be my strap of choice (not the biggest leather strap fan either).
In order to improve wearability, the brand implemented air ducts on the underside of the strap, allowing air to pass underneath the strap and prevent sweating.
The movement
The movement used is the same automatic in-house caliber L155.1 datomatic with day and big date display, which is now encased in a 120m water resistant, 40.5mm wide white gold case, making this version also useable as more robust timepiece.
Adventure
As the name of the collection already suggests, this is a watch than can accompany you on any adventure without sacrificing a single bit of the A. Lange & Söhne prestige and quality. A more understated design, many Lange collectors will appreciate.
All in all I really like this new addition, as it is everything I expect from a sporty A. Lange & Söhne watch, while still ensuring me that I can perfectly wear it in most situations. The little red 60 at 12 o’clock adds a nice splash of colour to the otherwise very subtle and classic dial.
And while the white gold case will be a tad bit darker than the steel version, you’ll only realise that when comparing the two side by side. With the black rubber or brown leather strap the piece is a lot more understated than on the steel bracelet, which might be something many Lange collectors will surely appreciate.
There is something that you demand not only of your watch, but also of yourself: never stand still.
