The Glashütte Original SeaQ is based on the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200 from the 1960s. The Spezimatic was one of the first divers watch ever built in Glashütte. In todays world the watch is designed to be worn during the good times. Although you’ll most likely always have a good time when wearing a Glashütte Original, you’re unlikely to see military personnel with a luxury dive watch.
ISO 6425 and DIN 8306
The Glashütte Original SeaQ comes in a 39.5mm stainless steel case with 200m of water resistance, whereas the 43.2mm the SeaQ Panorama Date boasts a water resistance of 300m. Both watches can be worn no matter whether you are at the beach, hiking in the mountains or in that business meeting. The nature of the watch is of course focused on the sea. To be more specifically diving, as the bezel turns unidirectional. Also, the watch fully complies to the ISO 6425 and DIN 8306 dive watch specifications.
Powered by an in-house automatic winding caliber
Like Glashütte Original watches, the SeaQ and SeaQ Panorama Date, are powered by an in-house made automatic winding caliber (SeaQ: caliber 39-11; SeaQ Panorama Date: caliber 36-13). While the SeaQ has a power reserve of 40 hours, the Panorama Date comes with a larger power reserve of 100 hours. The caseback displays the beautifully finished movement.
The SeaQ is definitely the more vintage inspired watch with a closed caseback, small date window at three o’clock and an overall smaller size, whereas the SeaQ Panorama Date looks more modern due to its larger size and either black, blue or grey dial with white luminous material.
Green dials
For 2021, Glashütte Original has gone with one of watchmakings most famous design hues – a green dial. In recent years, we have seen quite a number of watches with green dials, from affordable watches to the most coveted stainless steel luxury sports watch. With that in mind, it comes as no surprise that more brands follow suit and create their own green dial for specific timepieces. The brand has already released green dials within their famous Sixties and PanoMatic Lunar collections. These are among their highest regarded timepieces, their latest collection was missing a bit of colour.
Glashütte Original Sixties
When taking a careful look at the brand’s other green dials, you will see that there is more to these than just a different colour. Glashütte Original wouldn’t be the brand we know and love, if they wouldn’t do things wholeheartedly.
Incredibly rich colour
This is why every one of their green dials is completely different to one another. For example the dial of the green Sixties model features an incredibly rich colour. Also, a unique texture is achieved by a 60-ton press that creates a finely textured surface pattern.
For the SeaQ, the brand decided to go for a very subtle hue of green that can change from black to green. This depends on how the light hits it. This time however, the brand did not just change the colour of the dial, but also the diving bezel as well. They perfectly colour coordinated to emit the same kind of green.
Glashütte Original’s understated luxury timepieces
Choosing such an understated colour is a perfect choice in my opinion, as a vintage inspired dive watch is usually not designed to be flashy, yet a subtle hint of colour can make it significantly more interesting to many of us. Furthermore the touch of colour will set it apart from a nice suit or casual outfit .
Nonetheless, even with the green dial the watch remains an understated luxury timepiece that can be worn from the office to the beach without ever looking out of place or drawing unwanted attention, all while being one of the most interesting pieces at your next get together.
The green version of the SeaQ however is not the only new watch the brand has added to their collection, but an additional steel and gold model with a gorgeous blue dial is among their 2021 novelties. While the brand has shown us a mouth watering grey dial with bi-colour case for the SeaQ Panorama Date in 2020, the bi-colour SeaQ completes the collection of luxurious high-end dive watches. These two pieces amplify the luxurious approach of the collection even further and offer beautiful contrast to the steel case and respective colours of the dials.
A bolder presence
Steel and gold watches are certainly bolder than the standard steel model, but offer that hue of luxury while still fitting perfectly into the vintage inspired design of the SeaQ collection. Obviously you will see quite a difference between the SeaQ and the SeaQ Panorama Date, but given that the latter is nearly 3mm larger in diameter it offers a bolder presence on the wrist which many collectors enjoy.
For me personally the SeaQ at 39.5mm is the perfect choice, as my smaller wrist circumference drives me towards smaller watches. Luckily, the green dial and bezel have been added to the SeaQ, which I can most certainly wear without any size issues.
Nothing short of modern features
And while the SeaQ is a vintage inspired dive watch it is nothing short of modern features that make it a more than suitable companion for dives up to 200m. Its in-house movement is obviously state of the art in terms of movement technology, the bezel inlay is made of a highly scratch resistant ceramic and when you unscrew the crown you will find a red coloured inner tube that warns you about the unscrewed state.
Fulfilling all requirements for the DIN 8306 (German dive watch norm) as well as the ISO 8306 (international dive watch norm), the new Glashütte SeaQ will accompany you wherever you take it!
