Introducing the Citizen Promaster Mechanical Diver 200m ref. NB6021

Based upon a dive watch from 1977 that was found on a beach in 1983 and had been covered in barnacles, while still functioning, the brand decided to revive the design into a modern diver that lives up to the brands technological standard.

Citizen’s Promaster line-up features a significant amount of extremely cool dive watches. It’s ranging from solar powered affordable easy to wear ones up to a highly specialized 1000m water resistant professional diver. This year the brand introduces a new mid range automatic that could just be their coolest watch yet!

Mechanical and solar powered movements

The most important factor about this Citizen Promaster watch is without doubt the mechanical movement. Citizen has used mechanical movements extensively in the past, but in recent years the numbers of these went down with their focus on solar powered movements for the entire range of their watches.

Mechanical is rising again

While the solar powered movements will not be replaced soon, it’s nice to see the numbers of mechanical movements rise again. With a power reserve of 42 hours, anti-magnetism of 200 gauss, central hour, minutes and seconds hands, as well as a date at three o’clock, it is certainly built to the current standard of movements in this price range.

Citizen Promaster in Super Titanium

Another feature that should not be overlooked is the case of the Citizen Promaster. The case is all brushed, has darker hue than steel as it is made of Citizen’s proprietary lightweight Super Titanium. The use of titanium is nothing unusual for the brand. A significant amount of the Citizen watches is made from the metal.

Duratect

Using titanium has several advantages, such as being much lighter than steel, hypoallergenic, as well as more corrosion resistant. However, it is also more prone to scratches. Citizen has addressed this with their patented Duratect technology that significantly improves the metal’s scratch resistance. This surface hardening technology makes the Citizen Promaster watches even more scratch resistant than a comparable steel watch. Something I can testify, as I own a Citizen dive watch with Duratect, that still looks brand new after years of wear.

Vintage inspired

The polished bezel with black aluminum insert is a welcome contrast against the all brushed case. It also and has a nice feel to it, although it is only a 60 click one. Protecting the dial is sapphire crystal that is domed on the inside to create a more vintage look.

The Citizen Promaster ref. NB6021 comes on a vintage inspired rubber strap that looks and feels great. It is soft to the touch, yet feels sturdy enough to work well with the toolwatch nature of the watch. The strap is closed with a titanium pin and buckle that has been executed in the same brushed finish as the case.

For a price of 650 € for the shown model, or 750 € for the blue dial and bezel with titanium bracelet version (Citizen Promaster ref. NB6021-68L) the watch offers extremely great value! The scratch resistant Super Titanium case, anti-magnetic resistance, as well as the fantastic design, make the Citizen Promaster NB6021 a perfect watch for the upcoming summer!
