Two Important Richard Mille pieces at Christie’s

If you have a few million $ to spare and in the market for a new conversation piece this summer, check out Christie’s New York auction on June 10.

Christie’s has offered a first glimpse of the sale catalogue for their Important Watches auction to be held in June 10 in New York. Amongst some very interesting vintage Rolex and Patek pieces (including a ref. 6098 Prototype Pre-Explorer) two Richard Mille pieces stand out. Two pieces that live up to all the brands’ standards, being highly complicated, extravert and impressive. And out-of-this-worldish expensive, of course.

The RM56-02 AO Tourbillon Sapphire and a RM52-01 CA-FQ Tourbillon Skull tick a lot of boxes that will impress the even the seasoned Richard Mille collector. Let’s dive into some detail.

Richard Mille RM56-02 AO Tourbillon Sapphire (est. $3,000,000-4,000,000

This 2015 piece is an absolute showcase of the RM DNA. The transparent sapphire crystal case puts full visual emphasis on the skeletonized tourbillon with cable-suspended movement and cable tension indicator. The contrast creates an almost impossible balance between purity and complexity. First showcased at Watches and Wonders in 2015, the RM56-02 in this configuration was limited to only 10 pieces, and Christie’s indicates that to the best of their knowledge this is the first time one comes to auction.

The estimate of US$3,000,000 to $4,000,000 is steep, even for Richard Mille standards. With only two weeks to go for saving up I think I’ll have to pass..

Richard Mille RM52-01 CA-FQ Tourbillon Skull

Skull watches have a specific niche-following, and the bold and expressive statement a skull watch makes somewhat fits neatly with Richard Mille. Also made in a series of 10 (in this configuration) the RM52-01 is very light due to the white quartz carbon TPT case, and it features a diamond-set black skull covering the movement.

The Richard Mille Skull was first introduced in 2012 and the one on offered is dated around 2018 when 4 colour sets were made available. It is estimated to fetch US$750,000-1,000,000.

Potential buyers will probably already have visited one of the stops of the Global Tour that both watches, and other highlights have made in the past weeks. Next step is the Live auction, scheduled June 10 in New York. Browse the catalogue here.

Blancpain Fifty Fathoms is 70. Time to dive into this iconic diver

When talking divers’ watches the Fifty Fathoms usually ranks up quite prominent in the discussion, probably right after the Submariner. And deservedly so, as the launch of Blancpain’s icon in 1953 marked the start of the modern divers’ watch. While the model was successful and adopted by many professional (military) divers, the quartz crisis caused […]
