Panerai Submersible Quaranta Quattro – a DailyWatch review

Italian watchmaker Panerai has a long history related to diving and even their more classic Luminor and Radiomir watches have been used as serious dive watches in the past. This year the brand extends its modern diving dedicated collection with a new case size – introducing the Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro.

During Watches and Wonders 2022, Panerai introduced the Panerai Submersible Quaranta Quattro.

The Panerai Submersible Quaranta Quattro offers a new case size

So far, the Panerai Submersible has been available in an either 42mm or 47mm case diameter. In between, the new 44mm diameter fits perfectly and adds a size that was highly anticipated by many. Thanks to the new case size, nearly everyone will find a Submersible that suits his or her preferred case size and wearing comfort.

Still iconic

The watch still retains the iconic Submersible design DNA with a uni-directional rotating bezel with five minute increments, as well as the bridge that guards the crown and lever mechanism that pushes it in to ensure a water resistance of 300m.

Better legibility

Panerai offers cases in stainless steel or Carbotech, Panerai’s ultra-light and robust case material. Carbotech is found more and more often within the brands collections. Inside ticks the reliable automatic winding caliber P.900. It shows the central minutes and hours, as well as a small seconds display at nine and the date.

In comparison to older generations of the Submersible the date window is resized to allow better legibility and thus expend the need of a magnifying loupe.

The Panerai Submersible Quaranta Quattro made of Carbotech

For the new Submersible QuarantaQuattro, Panerai is delivering different types of case materials. The PAM 01226 and PAM 01229 come in “normal” stainless steel with the well known stainless steel bezel.

The PAM 01232 however, is made of Panerai’s proprietary Carbotech case material. Carbotech is lighter and significantly more robust than stainless steel. With a matching bezel and a black coated titanium caseback, the PAM 01232 retains its professional look from all angles.

These materials however, are not the only ones used for the Submersible QuarantaQuattro. As Panerai is digging deeper into the realms of sustainability in watchmaking, they also offer the Submersible QuarantaQuattro in eSteel (PAM 01287, PAM 01288, PAM 01289), which is the brand’s steel consisting of 52% recycled materials. To visually distinguish the eSteel from the other references, the brand proudly labeled it on the dial at six o’clock and further changed the bezel from stainless steel to a polished ceramic inlay that perfectly fits the color of the dial.

All in all the new Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro models, whether in steel, eSteel or Carbotech prove to be highly professional dive watches that combine the quality and design we all know and love from Panerai.
